India & Isobel shine at Nationals!
Last weekend saw India Weller & Isobel Hobbs take on the rest of Great Britain's best gymnasts in the British Age group finals, held at the Guildford Spectrum.
India competed first on Saturday 5th November in the level 2 category. India had a fantastic competition, nailing all her routines to finish 10th overall. Her faultless performance on bars gave her 4th position on this apparatus.
Isobel Hobbs continued the great work on Sunday where she competed as part of a very strong southern region team. Back in September Isobel performed brilliantly at the regional qualifier to finish 4th and gain the right to be part of the team for nationals. After a strong competition, with particular highlights on floor & vault Isobel finished in 48th position. This score, combined with her grades score from May ranks Isobel 43rd in GB for her age group. The team went on to become national champions!
A brilliant weekend for the girls, the coaches and the club!
Isobel and Rebecca join the Elite league!
Sunday 13th March saw Isobel Hobbs and Rebecca Griffin compete in the southern region compulsory grades, held in Portsmouth. Both of the girls successfully passed their grades with fantastic performances after months of hard work and dedication to their training: Both of the girls train in the Elite squad at Abingdon Gymnastics Club and within the southern region squad: They were the only gymnasts from Oxfordshire to compete in this level of competition. Rebecca competed in compulsory level 3, passing with a score of 51.80. Rebecca also achieved the highest score of the day on the range and conditioning exercise, with an excellent 11.60. Passing this grade allows Rebecca to continue along the elite path where she is hoping to compete at level 2 next year.
Eight year old Isobel Hobbs found herself in a very strong group of 15 gymnasts but rose to the challenge having the best competition of her gymnastics career to date. She competed solidly across all pieces of equipment leading up to the range and conditioning exercise where the nerves began to show; however Isobel was determined not to let this beat her and performed it to the best she has ever done. Both Isobel, and her coach waited for the score anxiously where she needed 9.50 to pass the grade. The score came in and all the months of hard work had paid off, Isobel scored an impressive 10.85, enough not only to pass but also to come 5th on this most difficult of disciplines. She then went on to achieve a brilliant score of 12.10 on vault to complete her competition. Isobel finished the competition with a score of 55.75 in 5th place overall. This puts her in the position of travelling reserve for the southern region team for national finals to be held on 31st April/1st May. Isobel will also compete as an individual for Abingdon at the British Age group Championships.
Abingdon gymnasts achieve 100% pass rate at National Club Grades!
Sunday 6th March saw Kerry Underwood, Rose Rooney and Rachel Willett compete in Portsmouth at the southern region national club grade championships. Kerry and Rose were up first and both girls had a solid competition with no falls from either of them across all 5 pieces, an achievement in itself! Both of the girls were amongst the youngest in the big competition of 25 gymnasts but kept their cool to pass their grades; Rose Rooney achieved a pass with a score of 53.40, her highest score coming on bars with 11.20, her best score to date on this apparatus. Kerry Underwood achieved a distinction with a massive score of 57.00 with her best score coming from the range and conditioning exercise where she score 11.65, coming 7th overall on this apparatus.
Rachel Willett had a difficult start to her competition when her personal coach, Laura Hartley was sent to hospital with a suspected broken ankle after taking a fall in the competition hall! Head coach, Nikki Woodward stepped in to coach Rachel through the competition where she also passed her grade with a score of 53.95. Rachel scored well across all pieces but the crowd, Nikki and Laura were particularly pleased with Rachel performing her giants on bars for the first time ever in competition; has trained particularly hard to achieve the bars routine required for this grade. Rachel's best score came from her floor exercise which impressed the judges for a score of 12.20 to give her 3rd place overall on this piece of apparatus.
All three girls train at the Abingdon Gymnastics Club and will now move on to compete in voluntary competitions from the spring.
